youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. nobody grows old merely by a number of years. we grow old by deserting our ideals.
years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.
whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. in the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.
when the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
some people often say that gold and silver are the most valuable things the world.however,i have my reservations.in my submission, reading is more valuable than anything else.it’s well known that book is the quintessence of human wisdom.reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
sometimes our daily life can start to feel dull, dry or depressing — i know it, you know it, we all know it. at times like this, i like to dive into a good fiction book for a much-needed escape into another world, where i can forget about whatever problems are stressing me out. whether you want to travel to the land of the hobbits, a galaxy far away or a tropical destination in a steamy romance novel is up to you. you’ll come back refreshed after your mini-vacation to a fresh and exciting place in the world of words.
books are our friends. they introduce us different kinds of knowledge. they lead us down the road to success.
books are our teachers. they teach us troth, science, literature, and philosophy of life. besides, they increase our knowledge, enlarge our experience, strengthen our character and do many other things which we can not do without them.
books tell us what is good and what is evil. and only books can tell the good from the bad.
therefore to read more books is the best policy for our young students.
reading introduced me to concepts like mindful eating, relaxation exercises, and the importance of loving yourself. if i didn’t read, i wouldn’t even be aware of these ideas, which have defined my entire coaching philosophy. if you don’t read, you could be missing out on intriguing ideas that would likewise re-define your personal purpose or business philosophy.
as is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. they increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. in other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. this is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.
reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. it is true that we can derive benefits from good books. however, bad books will do us more harm than good.
however, in current days, many of us spend most of the leisure time in playing games or surfing the internet, instead of reading. it's a pity to find it less and less our students are interesting in reading,or have formed a habit of reading.so,in order to revive reading, this beneficial activity,we'd better take action right now.let's read together, learn together and grow !
one is never too old to learn.no matter at what time we realize the importance of reading,we can enjoy it during the rest of our life and finally we will see that it is rewarding to do so.
so given a time turner, i would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. your qualifications, your cv, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.
now you might think that i chose my second theme, the importance of imagination, because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so. though i personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp, i have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense. imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. in its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared.
one of the greatest formative experiences of my life preceded harry potter, though it informed much of what i subsequently wrote in those books. this revelation came in the form of one of my earliest day jobs. though i was sloping off to write stories during my lunch hours, i paid the rent in my early 20s by working at the african research department at amnesty international’s headquarters in london.
there in my little office i read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them. i saw photographs of those who had disappeared without trace, sent to amnesty by their desperate families and friends. i read the testimony of torture victims and saw pictures of their injuries. i opened handwritten, eye-witness accounts of summary trials and executions, of kidnappings and rapes.
many of my co-workers were ex-political prisoners, people who had been displaced from their homes, or fled into exile, because they had the temerity to speak against their governments. visitors to our offices included those who had come to give information, or to try and find out what had happened to those they had left behind.
i shall never forget the african torture victim, a young man no older than i was at the time, who had become mentally ill after all he had endured in his homeland. he trembled uncontrollably as he spoke into a video camera about the brutality inflicted upon him. he was a foot taller than i was, and seemed as fragile as a child.
how many people here in this room smile more than 20 times per day? raise your hand if you do. oh, wow. outside of this room, more than a third of us smile more than 20 times per day, whereas less than 14 percent of us smile less than five.
in fact, those with the most amazing superpowers are actually children who smile as many as 400 times per day.have you ever wondered why being around children who smile so frequently makes you smile very often? a recent study at uppsala university in sweden found that its very difficult to frown when looking at someone who smiles.
you ask, why? because smiling is evolutionarily contagious, and it suppresses the control we usually have on our facial muscles. mimicking a smile and experiencing it physically help us understand whether our smile is fake or real, so we can understand the emotional state of the smiler.
my topic today is: word that has changed the world
a word that has changed the world education of their children is highly valued by parents. to get education in the universities abroad has been the dreams for both the parents and their children. to realize these dreams, the parents have to save a large amount of money for the studies, because international flights cost a lot. in addition, the tuition abroad is not cheap. parents should also have to pay for the food, room and utilities for their children at the school abroad. the children also need some money for the entertainment and social events. the clothing will cost quite a little. besides, they need extra money to cover some unexpected expenses, like long-distance calls and so on.
all in all, the parents should check out how much the living and tuition will cost for their children to study abroad. they should get prepared in advance.
thank you .
